Nigel Wong

Trained initially as a software engineer, Nigel Wong has developed expertise in business systems development, software methodologies, and network security. He entered the travel industry while working in Australia, where he developed one of the most popular online adventure travel sites promoting self-drive and outback excursions.

Returning to Kuala Lumpur in 2009, he formed Urban Rhythms Tours Adventures & Travel Sdn Bhd to promote eco-tourism and adventure travel in the digital space and develop customized web applications for the travel industry.

Since 2013, he has been a member of the Executive Council of MATTA, serving as VP for Research & Technology, Honorary Secretary General for six years, Honorary Treasurer for two years, and currently as President. He launched the Green Circle Initiative (GCI) to promote public-private collaboration for a sustainable tourism future in Malaysia and initiated discussions with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to explore adopting sustainable practices within MATTA. His strategic focus is on integrating sustainable practices across all levels of tourism, from promoting eco-friendly travel options to collaborating with stakeholders to reduce the carbon footprint of tourism activities. Nigel's goal is to position Malaysia as a global leader in sustainable tourism, ensuring that the industry contributes positively to the environment and local communities for generations to come.

Since 2019, he has also served as Secretary General of the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), where he pioneered the Travel Safe Alliance and developed an ASEAN Vaccine Passport Protocol using blockchain technology.
